Phew.
Firstly, there are a lot of ants. A lot of medium sized ants. Yep.
Secondly, the grass is dead. Everywhere. Unless of course it's somewhere swank, and they can afford to replace the grass every day. Other than that, it's all just a short, spikey haze of yellow and brown.
Mc'D's free internet is the bomb. On-campus internet seems to be hideously expensive, so having a free alternative (just down the road, too) is most excellent. Rock on, dudes.
Belconnen is not like Chatswood (which I originally likened it to... having only seem the maps.) It's still good, though - there's a Westfield shopping centre, a Mc'D's, skate park, swimming pool (I think...), library, and - OH! DID I MENTION I FOUND THE OP SHOPS? ;^) The Salvos and Vinnies are expensive, but I found a VERY nice little op-shop on the other side of town. Not nearly as cute and nice as Father R's, but I think it'll grown on me.
Buses are the new trains. Word. They have a giant bus terminal here that slightly resembles a subway (except there's no roof) and there are platforms to wait for your bus at and it's all very swank. Miss the trains though. (oh now I'm just being difficult.)
Flat mates are ok. N's doing his Masters (in what, I forget) and is from America, and is a VERY laid back kinda guy - bit messy in the kitchen, but we'll see if he improves... J's from near the snow, and her boyfriend, M, is staying in our apartment block too. She's nice, is a bit more social than me and seems to be a little put-off that I don't really do the party scene, but hey. M's nice too, and spends most of his time with J. Both of them did a gap year and lived away from home, so they're a bit better at the whole housekeeping-thing. B is the last of my four flat mates, and she doesn't look like she's ever lived away from home before. She might struggle with her new life for a while, but she'll get the hang eventually. Nice bunch, all in all - but very different to me, and to each other. We'll see how it goes.
Been living off left overs and salad sandwiches. I went out with Mum, the boys and Grete the afternoon I moved in, and we had dinner at "Wok It Up" across the road. The meals were massive, so they left me with their leftovers, to keep me from starving for a week. Got three dinners left, then I have to start cooking.
My apartment is very swank. It's all new and shiny, and so far we haven't made too much of a mess (wash your damn plates, N! (at least I assume it's N...hmm.)). Moved all my gear in and put my op-shopped sheets and blankets on my bed - that's right, Jac has to sleep in a bed now. No floor for her. :^( And that's not all - this bed hates me. It's a king-single, and my sheets don't fit properly. * glares at bed across the distance * The rest of my room is nice, and much bigger than I thought it would be - put all my masses of stuff in, and still had room! Some more op-shopping'll fix that...
I love my bike. Well, mum's bike - mine's still out-of-action at the moment. So I love mum's bike. There are bike paths almost everywhere, and every second person seems to have a bike. Also, the ACT really isn't that big, so you can pretty much ride everywhere. This afternoon (after op-shopping) I went out on the bike in the vague direction of Black Mountain (you know, Telsra Tower?). An hour (and several wrong turns) later, I reached the top (left the bike locked to a tree about halfway up because it got too steep to ride or push it). Rang mum (because heck, with reception like that, who'd pass up the chance?) and yacked at her while taking pictures, then came back down and managed to get lost again coming home.
... I'm freezing - this place's air conditioning's got my fingers numb and it's getting harder and harder to type. I'd better go, but I promise photos and more writing next time.
To the apartment, Batman! ~

Oh, you have made your mam so happy with your return to blogging.
ReplyDeleteI missed u while u were at Maccas, because I was remote desktopping to work. Earned $75, sitting on my behind with Puds trying to type with her feet, while supervising the boys making zucchini slice. Transport costs - $0. Travel time - 1 sec. Dress code - pyjamas. And I don't have to pack lunch. :-))D
I wish you all the best with your bed. Do you have room to drag the mattress off onto the floor?
